In a significant move towards technological self-reliance, the Government of India has chosen Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI to develop the country’s first indigenous large language model (LLM) under the ambitious IndiaAI Mission.

Sarvam AI, founded in 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, aims to create a sovereign AI model tailored to India’s linguistic and cultural diversity. The model will be built, deployed, and optimized entirely within India, utilizing local infrastructure and talent.

The upcoming LLM is designed to possess advanced reasoning capabilities, support voice interactions, and be fluent in multiple Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and more. This initiative is expected to enhance accessibility and usability of AI technologies across various sectors in India.

Under the IndiaAI Mission, Sarvam AI will receive dedicated compute resources to develop the model from scratch. The startup is also collaborating with AI4Bharat at IIT Madras, a leader in Indian language AI research, to build these models.

This development marks a pivotal step in India’s journey towards AI sovereignty, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign AI models and foster innovation within the country.
