In a move that’s equal parts parental control and PR repair, Meta announced today it’s rolling out a new AI-powered system designed to automatically detect teenagers on Instagram—and shift them into more restrictive “Teen Accounts” without waiting for them to opt in.

The AI system, which Meta says can analyze behavior patterns, language, and activity data, is the company’s latest attempt to clean up Instagram’s long-criticized track record with underage users and online safety.

Let’s be real—13-year-olds posing as 18-year-olds online isn’t breaking news. Meta just decided to stop pretending they don’t know.

“We’re using advanced machine learning models to identify when someone may be underage or a teen, even if they don’t say so in their profile,” said Antigone Davis, Meta’s head of global safety.

The moment the system flags a user as a teen, their account will be auto-shifted into Instagram’s Teen Account mode—limiting who can message them, turning off location tagging, and muting certain content.

While safety groups have applauded the feature as a much-needed step, privacy watchdogs are already raising eyebrows.

“Meta’s using AI to ‘guess’ your age based on how you act online. That’s a slippery slope,” said Julia Winters, tech policy analyst at Digital Rights Now.

Meta insists the AI doesn’t use facial recognition or scrape photos, but rather behavioral data like interests, connections, and engagement patterns—basically, if you comment like a teen, scroll like a teen, and like memes like a teen… you’re a teen.

What sets this apart? Once flagged, users can’t immediately opt out of Teen Account mode.

Meta says it’s doing this to “prioritize safety over convenience,” but it’s already drawing fire from digital rights groups worried about consent and false positives.

Still, the company claims the feature will improve over time. “If someone is misclassified, there will be a review process,” Davis noted.

The Bigger Picture

This move comes as regulators globally tighten their grip on Big Tech and its relationship with youth. With lawsuits piling up and countries like the UK enforcing child-focused design codes, Meta is scrambling to stay ahead of the pitchforks.

Whether this AI-powered babysitter makes Instagram a safer place—or just adds another layer of surveillance—is still up for debate.

But one thing’s clear: Gen Z just got a new algorithmic chaperone, and it’s watching everything.
